Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to sell part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who each also own a third of the company.

An official representative said: "We are providing no comment on this. The governance of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement signifies a significant increase in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos Group bought its share for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in market values of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and has grossed over $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races left in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a unprecedented eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
