Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
